Guterres wins UN secretary-general seat


Antonio Guterres has been re-elected Secretary-General of the United Nations by a 193-member Security Council and will serve for the next five years, effective January 1, 2022.

UN Ambassador Sven Jürgenson Estonia’s government, said: “He made it clear that he deserves a place in the past five years in office,”

Mr Jürgenson added that Guterres was a high-level general secretary. He is a bridge builder… He is able to talk to everyone, and I think this is what is expected of the secretary general. ”
Guterres took over from Ban Ki-moon in January 2017, following a tight race in October 2016 that initially included 13 candidates – seven women and six men.

António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, 72, was born on April 30, 1949 in Lisbon, Portugal.
Guterres is the ninth secretary general of the United Nations.
