Al-Shabaab militants have launched an early morning attack on a government base at Sabiib Bridge, south of Afgoye in Lower Shabelle region.
The fighting was reported to have taken place in Afgoye town, the provincial capital of Lower Shabelle region in southern Somalia.
Government officials said they repulsed the Al-Shabaab fighters and inflicted heavy casualties on them.
Al-Shabaab claimed to have taken control of Sabiib, about 8km from Afgoye in the Lower Shabelle region, and seized military vehicles and ammunition.
Al-Shabaab militants have taken control of Sabid village in Lower Shabelle region, but Somali government officials and Afgoye district administration have not yet commented on the incident.
Somali government forces took control of Sabiib a year ago after heavy fighting, and al-Shabaab has since carried out several ambush attacks on government bases.
