Abiy Ahmed sworn in as Ethiopia’s prime minister

Abiy Ahmed Ali has been sworn in as Ethiopia’s new prime minister for the next five years, following a long-running election.

The prime minister is due to be sworn in after a controversial election in June.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Barwaqo party has won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections, paving the way for re-election.

The members of the Council of Ministers are expected to reflect, while the new government will stop fighting in the Tigrean region. Some members of the opposition are expected to be part of the new cabinet.

The parliament opened today, with the swearing in of the Speaker of the House, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Upper House.
